10. ESSENTIAL DUʿĀS
How to Make Duʿāʾ
The Prophet ﷺ taught the order of making duʿāʾ: begin with praise of Allah, send ṣalawāt upon the Prophet ﷺ, then ask for whatever you need, and end with ṣalawāt again.
1. Praise Allah (Ḥamd & Thanāʾ)
Begin by glorifying Allah, for example “Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbil-ʿālamīn”, and by calling upon His Beautiful Names.
2. Send Blessings (Ṣalawāt)
Recite Ṣalāt al-Ibrāhīmiyyah (Darood Ibrahim) or a short ṣalawāt upon the Prophet ﷺ.
3. Ask Your Duʿāʾ
Pour your heart out: ask for forgiveness, health, guidance and your needs of this world and the next, with conviction (yaqīn).
4. Conclude with Blessings
End your duʿāʾ by sending ṣalawāt upon the Prophet ﷺ again and praising Allah.

(Source note: This exact phrasing is not recorded verbatim in the canonical hadith books as a fixed narration from the Prophet ﷺ. It is a well-established supplication crafted by Muslim scholars and jurists, widely recited in Duʿāʾ al-Qunūt (in Witr and Tarāwīḥ) and in community prayers. It is grounded in the general Quranic and Prophetic commands to pray for fellow believers and show communal mercy, such as Surah al-Ḥashr (59:10): “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith…”, Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6011 [8a], and Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3201 [8b].)

This supplication was made by Prophet Yūnus from inside the belly of the whale. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said regarding it: “No Muslim ever supplicates with it for anything, except that Allah responds to him.”

Transliteration: Rabbi innī ẓalamtu nafsī faghfir lī.
Translation: “My Lord! I have indeed wronged myself, so forgive me.”
(Note: There is also an authentic Prophetic variation taught by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq to say in prayer: “Allāhumma innī ẓalamtu nafsī ẓulman kathīran wa lā yaghfiru al-dhunūba illā anta faghfir lī maghfiratan min ʿindik…”)
