7. SLEEP & WAKING ROUTINE

A. Bedtime Sunnah (Before Sleeping):

1. Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah: 255):

Recite 1 time.

“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 2311).

2. Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (285–286):

“The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, saying, ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they say, ‘We hear and we obey. We seek Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final destination.’ Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have the consequence of what good it has gained, and it will bear the consequence of what evil it has earned. ‘Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.’”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 5008, 5009 & Sahih Muslim, Hadith 807).

3. Cupping Hands, Blowing & Wiping (3 times):

Cup your hands, recite Surahs Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, blow lightly into your hands, and wipe over your head, face, and the front of your body. Repeat 3 times.

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 5017, 5748, 6319).

4. Bedtime Tasbih Fatimah:

SubhanAllah (33 times): (“Glory be to Allah”)

Alhamdulillah (33 times): (“Praise be to Allah”)

Allahu Akbar (34 times): (“Allah is the Greatest”)

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 3705 & Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2727).

5. Sleeping Du’a:

“O Allah, in Your name I die and live.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 6312, 6324).

B. Waking Up Sunnah (Upon Awakening):

When waking up from sleep, wipe the sleep from your face with your hands and recite:

“All praise is for Allah Who gave us life after having caused us to die, and unto Him is the resurrection.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 6312, 6324, 6325, 183 & Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2711, 763).
